Fup asks Bear if he's heard about the man whose two cats recently found their way home from the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness three weeks after leaping out the open window of his moving pickup truck and disappearing into the hills. It's been all over the newspapers and local TV news since Friday, the season's first feel-good fluff piece.

"The question no one's asking," Fup points out, "is why they jumped from the pickup in the first place."

"The owner thought they were chasing a small animal or maybe a bird," I tell them.

Clearly, this is not the right thing to say. Bear stops licking his paw. He starts to say something, but instead just shakes his head.

I must stop speaking in front of the cats.
