Fup's young country cousins, unaccustomed to caffeine at such late hours, were clearly wired after her tea party, so Fup volunteered to give them a tour of the construction along Portland's new streetcar line. A brisk walk through the nighttime city, she figured, would surely wear them out.

Well, one minute Fup was showing them the building on whose grounds Bear had courted her (only a year ago, when still the block teemed with backhoes, dirt piles, and concrete piping) and the next she turned around to find Wiggums and Barleycorn gone. Gone! Later, Fup would admit that perhaps she'd lost herself in reminiscences. Perhaps, in fact, a great deal of time had passed. She'd been drinking decaf. She could not entirely rule out the possibility that she'd fallen asleep.

But Wiggums and Barleycorn (who say they live in Gresham when really their house is just south of the Boring line, as if the distinction would somehow certify them as urbanites)... it simply wasn't like them to wander.

"They're growing up," Bear told her in the morning. Well, of course she saw that now. Fup had feigned a righteous anger upon her cousins' dawn return, but Bear knew she was more embarrassed than upset: her young cousins had fooled her, had ducked her supervision so easily to spend a night roaming city streets doing who-knows-what. It wasn't their aging that irked Fup nearly so much as her own.
