They lined the wide fence railing, all six neighborhood cats, in various states of cat repose. Over near the hopscotch grids with her third graders, Miss Anbinder eyed the six of them cautiously.

Good cats or bad cats? Miss Anbinder wondered. She really hoped they were good cats. Why had none of the other teachers mentioned this gang of loitering felines? I should make an effort to spend more time in the teachers' lounge, she decided.

Sarah, arcing ever higher on the swing, had not expected cats either, but this being her first day at the new school she was glad to learn that she wouldn't be stuck with just kids all year. It would be so much more interesting to spend the year with cats. Just cats. She leaned so far back in the seat that her ponytail swept the ground and she made her feet walk on the sky.

"What do you want to do?" Fup asked the others when the bell rang.

Bear petted his brow. "How long till the buses come again?"

"I'm hungry," Cesar reminded them.

"Look," Oliver interrupted. "The girl on the swing is coming."
