Spirits are high this time of year at The Happy Wagger. The place is jammed with regulars, dozens of dogs lapping crisp, fresh water from bowls; Akitas, Labs, and poodles side by side sharing olfactory intimations of the surprises waiting inside gift-wrapped packages back home. (As if you could disguise the smell of rawhide with cellophane, paper, and a few strategically placed pieces of tape.)

Outside it's raining, hard. Muddy paw trails cover the floor.

Fup pushes her empty bowl across the bar top. "Small milk, dash of salmon salt," she says, "Hold the ice."

The bartender (the dachshund who only works day shifts) sighs. He grabs the hose, refills the water in her bowl, and nudges it back to her side of the ledge.

What she wouldn't do for a cat bar in the neighborhood.
