When the sun breaks through the clouds a wash of light falls squarely on Fup, strategically situated for such an opportunity and preening now, on the hood of a Dodge parked in front of the store. After a moment's quiet she says to Linc, who's resting on the stoop still with the xylophone strapped to his chest, "Play."

But Linc, exhausted, just takes another bite of his cookie.

A piece eludes Linc's mouth, grazes B-flat, and tumbles to the pavement. Zooey, tethered to the storefront bike rack with a scroogish length of climbing rope, checks his leash again for knots or tangles. Eight more inches, by his estimation, and he could reach — but, no, the taut rope defeats him again.

Too soon, the sun disappears, reducing the car top suddenly to a cold, windswept plateau. Fup reluctantly removes herself to the sidewalk, stretches, then for lack of a better idea (the aisles are filled with frantic holiday shoppers, no place for a cat seeking quiet), she wanders toward Linc and proceeds to rub her ear against his calf — stepping, as she does so, square onto the abandoned cookie, crushing it to dust on the damp cement.

Zooey closes his eyes and thinks of dinner.
