Suddenly all their reference points had slipped. Since the news, throughout alleys and parks around the world, on front porch steps and in great open fields, cats have been gathering in unprecedented numbers to talk and to wonder. To speculate about the future. To be together.

Rumors persist that Calicos have been sitting on cloning technology for years; that this is in fact only the first revelation and it will soon be established that Calico scientists have also developed an energy supplement so powerful as to bring dogs to their mercy. Norwegian Forest Cats, meanwhile, have refused to address repeated inquiries regarding several large facilities deep in the Scandinavian woods.

Patches insists it's not true, the part about the Calicos, anyway — as if Fup or Bear or even Ro suspects her, a Calico, of plotting this. Ro's been in town only two weeks and even she clearly sees that Patches couldn't plot so much as a joke.

"I've never known a Norwegian Forest Cat," Bear says, "but I think if I had to subsist on one breed's cuisine, it would be theirs. Dairy, fish, and waffles. I could eat that every day and be happy."

Fup shakes her head. Lately it seems she's always shaking her head and thinking about her age.
