Powell's in the Community"We have a social responsibility to the community and to our industry to fight censorship, promote literary awareness and encourage authors and their works." from Powell's Mission Statement
Powell's Books is committed to the strength of a well-informed community and supports numerous organizations working to ensure the unimpeded sharing of ideas and knowledge. Donating books, time and money, Powell's Books is a leader in the support of public schools and libraries, adult literacy programs, children's reading programs, free speech issues, and civil rights causes.
At the center of Powell's Community Giving Program for the last nine years was our It's for Kids campaign, through which approximately 40,000 books have been donated to Portland and Beaverton public schools. In 2005, the program was redesigned to significantly increase the flow of books into local schools. Through the new School Book Challenge program, in just one year, Powell's will donate 55,000 books to local students, exceeding all It's For Kids donations of the prior nine years combined.
Scores of schools, literacy programs, media organizations, civil rights groups, health education groups, small publishers, arts organizations, and writers groups have received gifts from Powell's Books. It's one small way of saying thank you to a community who love books, value independent bookstores, and support the importance of reading in every person's life.
