remember: Powell's is a real, physical store with big swinging doors and
all sorts of people passing through them. When someone buys a book, it's
gone for good. Posting titles on our Web site only accelerates the
process. Occasionally, it still happens: two people order the same copy
before we've had a chance to remove the title from our database. In these
rare cases, the customer whose order was placed first receives the book.

day, in Portland and via the Internet. So is our mothership the
