John Buntin: IMG Notes from the (Bibliographic) Underground

For more than 60 years, Los Angeles's origins, its underbelly, and (yes) its blondes have fueled the imagination of writers and directors from... Continue »

Who we are

"A Powell's shopper can choose to pay $24.95 for a new hardback, $15 for the same volume used, and even less if the same book is available in paperback." The Philadelphia Inquirer

Read what Time Magazine, The Industry Standard, and The Wall Street Journal, among others, have been saying about Powell's in the press.
Shop at Powell's once and you'll never want to settle for an ordinary New-editions-only bookstore again. Why? Because at Powell's, not only do we carry books by all your favorite authors and on your favorite topics, we let you choose between Hardcover and Paperback, used and new. And every book we sell is completely guaranteed for quality - maybe that's why so many readers scour our Used titles to fill their wish lists.

Browse wherever you want. Then buy your books here, used, at a fraction of the cost!

With more than 1.5 million books accessible to the public every day of the year, our inventory remains in a constant state of flux. Books come in, books go out, minute by minute and day by day. To reduce the risk of multiple calls on a single title, we update our Web site every night. But remember: Powell's is a real, physical store with big swinging doors and all sorts of people passing through them. When someone buys a book, it's gone for good. Posting titles on our Web site only accelerates the process. Occasionally, it still happens: two people order the same copy before we've had a chance to remove the title from our database. In these rare cases, the customer whose order was placed first receives the book. Supply is limited, as they say, so scoop up your favorite before someone else gets to it first!

"Powell's probably is the world's greatest bookstore." The Seattle Times

These days, everybody says they're "the world's biggest bookstore." But what does that really mean? Furthermore, why does it even matter? Well, each day customers are carried out of our main store in stretchers, rendered immobile due to the shock of the sheer size and grandeur of our City of Books location:

  • 68,000 square feet packed with books
  • we buy 3,000 used books over the counter every day
  • approximately 3,000 people walk in and buy something every day
  • another 3,000 people just browse and drink coffee
  • there are 40 spaces in our parking garage (ok, so there are bigger parking garages)
  • we stock 226 major subject areas and more than 4,000 subsections
  • you'll find more than 1,000,000 volumes on our shelves
  • approximately 40,000 book lovers browse the City's shelves every day, in Portland and via the Internet. So is our mothership the world's largest bookstore? Heck, it may be bigger than your whole town.

But don't let that scare you!

"In this age of chain superstores and online selling, it often seems that the days of the old-style independent dealer are numbered. But one American bookseller, at least, refuses to believe that." The Independent (London)

Powells.com provides access to each of our seven Portland-area stores at once: not just the world renowned Powell's City of Books, but also our Technical, Cookbook, and Travel stores, the Hawthorne and Beaverton locations - and even our giant Hoyt Warehouse (otherwise off-limits to the public). Powells.com brings all our used, new, out of print, and rare books together into one easy-to-navigate system. Visit our Web site to find great books at unbeatable prices, and stay out of the rain while you're at it.

Here's how it works:

When you place an order through our Web site, a message is immediately forwarded to the store(s) holding the titles. Your selections are pulled from the shelves that day or the next morning, depending on the time of day you place your order. Once it leaves the store, your book is forwarded downtown to our Internet office and packaged with others you might have ordered. Someone throws a stamp on the box and, voila, the magical postal system carries it right to your door!

Now go ahead and type your favorite book into our Search engine - maybe one you can never seem to find in your local stores. Do we have it in stock? Used? New? Hardcover, paper, or both? Odds are you'll find it at Powell's. And for less than anywhere else.

Explore our site. Check out our latest Bestsellers, Great Deals, and special features. Subscribe to our monthly newsletter and keep up to date with book news and each new Powell's contest.

And enjoy!
