Powell's Q&A

Lee Child

Describe your latest project.
One Shot is the ninth in the Jack Reacher series... and the premise goes like this: a madman with a rifle shoots five passersby and is quickly arrested. The only thing he will say is "Find Jack Reacher for me." Why? For what? What's the connection between this obvious psycho and Jack Reacher? Well, it's not what it seems. In fact, nothing in the book is what it seems.

If someone were to write your biography, what would be the title and subtitle?
"Always Lucky... the Most Fortunate Man Who Ever Lived"

What fictional character would you like to date, and why?
I'd spend a day or two with Samantha Kincaid, from Alafair Burke's books — high maintenance, but probably worth it.

Introduce one other author you think people should read, and suggest a good place to start.
Joseph Kanon... start with his third, The Good German.

Writers are better liars than other people: true or false; why or why not.
True, without doubt — we're the only people positively encouraged to do it.

How did the last good book you read end up in your hands and why did you read it?
Harlan Coben and I did an event together on our respective UK launch tours and he gave me a copy of his latest, The Innocent. I read it because I love to read books by people I know.

What section of the newspaper do you read first?
Sports, every time. The box scores are about the only true things in the paper these days.

What makes your favorite pair of shoes better than the rest?
I like shoes that last fifteen years, minimum. One year of breaking in, fourteen years of comfort. Typically each shoe I wear is worth more than the whole rest of my outfit. Not difficult, as those who have met me know.

Describe the best breakfast of your life.
Room service in the George V hotel in Paris, with my wife on our wedding anniversary.

What is your idea of absolute happiness?
Bahamas, beach, book.

Why do you write?
Because readers want me to, happily.

Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin?
Fahrenheit. What are those other two?

Who's wilder on tour: rock bands or authors?
Rock bands. I hope.

What do you dislike most?
The "R" words — returns and remainders.
