Powell's Q&A

Amy Ephron

Describe your latest project.
In One Sunday Morning, four women at a bridge party, in 1926, see a beautiful young woman, whom they all know, leaving the Gramercy Park Hotel on a Sunday morning with a man who is not her husband (and who is engaged to another friend of theirs), looking as if they spent the night there. They all promise not to tell and, one-by-one, they all tell, with devastating consequences for them all... Things aren't always what they seem — and the incident affects all of their lives.

What fictional character would you like to date, and why?
Gatsby. Because there's something very appealing about a man who seems as if he can only be close to one woman.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?
When I was six and at sleep-away camp, there was a gymkhana, a western riding event on parents' weekend, which all the kids participated in and all the parents came, as well as the entire town of Carmel. They put me on a giant, ancient horse named Shane and I couldn't get him to move, not anywhere, not around the cans or the ring or anything. He took three steps into the ring and stopped with me on him. Shane was not going to go anywhere. And, as all the other kids passed me (time and again), the announcer from his microphone began shouting, "Here comes Amy on Shane!" which actually wasn't very nice of him as "Amy and Shane" weren't going anywhere! I was just flapping my legs and trying to coax the horse to move. And the audience began to laugh hysterically, as the announcer continued, "Oh, maybe she's got it, now... No, not yet...." One of the instructors finally had to come and lead me and Shane out of the ring, to much applause, I might add. It was terrible. It was when I realized I didn't want to be a stand-up comedian.

Writers are better liars than other people: true or false? Why, or not?
Why lie when you can just delete?

Offer a favorite sentence or passage from another writer.
"Her voice was deep and rich and matched the look of her."
—Dominick Dunne, The Two Mrs. Grenvilles

What is your favorite indulgence, either wicked or benign?
My children.

Fahrenheit, Celsius, or Kelvin?
What's Kelvin?

What do you dislike most?
Government officials who favor themselves rather than the people they were elected to serve.
