If someone were to write your biography, what would be the title and subtitle?
Things the Grandchildren Should Know: The Story of a Clueless Kid from Virginia Who Encounters Many Troubles, Tragedies, and Delights along His Way to Becoming His Own Man.

Oops. Already been done.

How do you relax?
Cigar, whiskey, Bob Dylan. Not on the stereo. I invite him over.

Have you ever made a literary pilgrimage?
I drove up to J. D. Salinger's house and someone, presumably him, shot at me. The bullet only grazed my shoulder, but I was GRAZED BY J. D. SALINGER'S BULLET.

Who's wilder on tour, rock bands or authors?
Rock bands. I'm experienced in both areas now. Rock bands are called rock bands for a reason. They act like rock bands.

Who are your favorite characters in history? Have any of them influenced your writing?
I wrote a song after watching a documentary about Thomas Jefferson. The song had nothing to do with him but I have to think he had something to do with it somehow. Thanks, Thom.

Dogs, cats, budgies, or turtles?
Dogs.

In the For-All-Eternity category, what will be your final thought?
Are you gonna eat that?

Make a question of your own, then answer it.
Q: Are you tired of answering questions?

A: Yes.

Mark Oliver Everett is the lead singer, guitarist, and keyboardist of indie rock band The Eels. Rolling Stone magazine called Everett "the Kurt Vonnegut of the rock world." The author is the son of physicist Hugh Everett III, originator of the "Many Worlds" theory of quantum physics. While coping with the deaths of every member of his immediate family, Everett turned tragedy into the impetus for recording such acclaimed albums Electro-Shock Blues and Blinking Lights and Other Revelations.
