Describe your latest project.
Airman is a swashbuckling, sci-fi adventure set in the late nineteenth century. Conor Broekhart lives an ideal life on the Saltee Islands until he is framed for complicity in the king's murder and thrown into jail. For three years he designs a flying machine in his cell to help him escape. If he succeeds, he will be the first man to fly a heavier-than-air contraption; if he fails, the wrongs done to him will never be righted.

What is your favorite family story?
I love The Princess Bride, which is a novel anyone can enjoy. If you don't laugh aloud at this one, you need a sense of humor transplant.

What fictional character would you like to be your friend, and why?
I would love to hang around with Huck Finn for a few days, drifting down the Mississippi on a raft, catching fish and lazing away the days. Also, he was a funny guy.

If you could choose any story to live in, which story would it be? Why?
Who would not like to live in Neverland, to be forever young and stuff every day with adventures?

Introduce one other author/illustrator you think people should read, and suggest a good book by him/her.
I think everyone should read St Louis's Ridley Pearson. He is bringing adult-quality thrillers to YA — try to get hold of his upcoming book Steel Trapp.

Describe your most memorable teacher.
My father taught me in 5th Grade back in the 10970s. He was a man ahead of his time who championed child-centered education and had a great sense of humour — still has.

How did the last good book you read end up in your hands?
Duane, a good friend in a Seattle bookstore, handed me The Lies of Locke Lamora, and threatened me with violence if I did not read it.

Do you read the Sunday funnies, and which are your favorites?
I am a sucker for Garfield. I have a friend who is definitely Garfield in human form.
