Liz Murphy

Describe your latest project.
This book is a light hearted but informative hop, skip and a jump through the complex language of dance. My hope is that in A Dictionary of Dance, any young dancer can be inspired through the bright animated illustrations, and learn all about arabesques, break dancing, choreographers, and the zones of the body — everything that comes together to make a dance, whether it's ballet or the polka. My heart lifted my feet and I danced!!!!!

"The dynamic and colorful illustrations have real child appeal with line-drawn characters happily and enthusiastically interpreting the words." School Library Journal
Introduce one other illustrator you think people would like.
As a child growing up I spent some time in Denmark where I came across an artist called Carl Larrson. He had a profound influence on the way I drew and my love of painting children in their environment.

Describe your most memorable teacher.
My most memorable teacher was of course my lovely art teacher, Mrs. Medlicot! She was warm and kind and very encouraging. She was as tall as a 6th grader and bursting with energy and enthusiasm! She believed I had a special gift and a talent and did all she could to encourage my love of art.

What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
Porridge — but then again, it might be Musli! I do like a crunch for breakfast!

What was your favorite story as a child?
My favorite family story, without any doubt, would have to be The Sound of Music!

What do you do for relaxation?
A good massage followed by a great book!!

What is your idea of bliss?
My idea of bliss would be to gallop on a wonderful stallion, headlong across a beautiful beach into the sunset!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
First and foremost I wanted to be Mom! Then I wanted to be able to draw and paint to my heart's content! Happy to say I am enjoying both.
