Kids' Q&A

Dugald Steer

Describe your new book.
The Dragon's Eye is the first of a series of Dragonology novels about two children, Daniel and Beatrice Cook, who find themselves thrown into an adventure with their parents' old tutor, eccentric dragonologist Dr. Ernest Drake, some wicked villains, and a number of different dragons. They become junior members of the S.A.S.D (the Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists) and learn a great deal about Dragonology — and about Dr. Drake — in the process

Introduce one other author/illustrator you think people should read, and suggest a good book by him/her.
I have always enjoyed Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, and I can't recommend it enough! It is the tale of a boy named Jim Hawkins, who discovers an old pirate treasure map and sets off in search of the pirate treasure. This is a thrilling adventure that will definitely grab you from the very first page!

Offer a favorite sentence or passage from another writer.
"There he lay, a vast red-gold dragon, fast asleep; a thrumming came from his jaws and nostrils, and wisps of smoke, but his fires were low in slumber. Beneath him, under all his limbs and his huge coiled tail, and about him on all sides stretching away across the unseen floors, lay countless piles of precious things, gold wrought and unwrought, gems and jewels, and silver red-stained in the ruddy light." — Bilbo Baggins first meets Smaug, The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien

What is your favorite literary first line?
"Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice." — Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude

How did the last good book you read end up in your hands?
It was The Janissary Tree by Jason Goodwin. It's an intriguing historical whodunit featuring Yashim, a detective who works in Istanbul for the Ottoman Sultan. It's set in 1836, and I was lucky enough to pick up an advance copy for free during a bookseller's charity walk.

What was your favorite story as a child?
I absolutely loved all of the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S.Lewis. I'm not sure which my favorite was, perhaps The Magician's Nephew or The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

What do you do for relaxation?
I go cycling, or walking — in the mountains or by the sea if possible...but anywhere apart from a city is fine!

What's your favorite holiday and why?
I think one of my favorite holidays of all time was taking a boat trip up the river Nile from Luxor to Aswan and back. Getting up early to go and look at some of the most interesting and well-preserved ancient monuments in the world, followed by a relaxing day watching the river Nile go by, was bliss. spacer
