Why does my status show that the download successful, but the book isn't there?
When you download a Microsoft Reader ebook, it directs itself to your Temporary Internet Files folder until the download is complete, then the file becomes “real” and appears where it should in your MS Reader library. It is possible that your Temporary Internet Files folder is full, so the download could not actually complete. To make your ebook appear in MS Reader as it should, the best thing to do is to delete your Temporary Internet Files and try downloading again. Here’s how to do that:
On your internet browser:
- click the “Tools” menu up at the top
- under “Temporary Internet Files” click “Delete files...”
- click “OK” until you’re back to your browser
Once that’s done, please return to your ebook library on our site:
http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/ebooklibrary
and redownload the title. It should then download just fine.
Why does the status show 'Microsoft Reader Not Activated'?
Whenever you install a new copy of Microsoft Reader, it requires activation prior to being able to access your ebook files.
What is Activation?
In order to complete the activation you will need to sign up for a Microsoft Passport. It is important to retain this passport information in case you ever have to reinstall and reactivate your Microsoft Reader. If you want to retain access to your ebooks, you’ll need to reactivate the new copy of Microsoft Reader with the same passport information.
Why does the error message 'Microsoft Reader is no longer able to read this title' come up when I try to access my ebook?
This is an error that occurs generally when downloading your ebook onto a Pocket PC device.
When you first read a book using Microsoft Reader, the software paginates the eBook for you: as you read your eBook, Microsoft Reader software determines the length of the eBook according to the current font size setting and updates the .EBO file for the opened book with that information. If you hard-reset your Pocket PC, Microsoft Reader assumes you’re opening an eBook for the first time, and the software paginates the eBook for you. If you open an eBook for the first time, and turn off the device while Reader is performing background pagination, you’ll receive an error, “Microsoft Reader is no longer able to access this book.”
Here’s how to fix the problem: Shut down Microsoft Reader:
- From the Start Menu, tap “Settings”
- Select the System tab.
- Select the Memory icon.
- Tap the Running Program tab.
- Highlight Microsoft Reader on the Running Program list.
- Tap OK.
- Navigate to My Documents/Annotations
- Start Microsoft Reader again.
- Open the eBook. Let the device remain turned on, allowing Microsoft Reader to repaginate until it completes. This process should not take more than a few minutes. Microsoft Reader needs to perform this operation just once for each eBook.
Why am I getting an error message that says I have mismatched credentials on my ebook?
Per the previous topic, if it is necessary to reactivate the Microsoft Reader due to system failure or upgrade, etc. it is of utmost importance to reactivate using your original passport login and password (or credentials). Otherwise, the ebooks that you are trying to open think that they are being stolen and will not cooperate. It’s kind of like trying to open your front door with someone else’s house key......generally un-successful.
If you can’t remember your login information you can get it at the following website: Windows Live ID
You can also update your information here if your email address has changed.
When trying to activate my Microsoft Reader, it keeps telling me that I need to have the ActiveX control installed. What is this and where do I get it?
ActiveX basically a set of rules for how applications should share information.
It refers to a somewhat loosely defined group of methods developed by Microsoft for sharing information and functionality among programs.
In the case of Microsoft Reader and your computer, it creates the ability for Microsoft Reader to coexist with and communicate with other programs that you have installed.
Permission for your computer to utilize an ActiveX control is able to be turned on and off in your Advanced Internet Options. In order for you to get this control, you must turn on the ActiveX control options in your Internet Options and disable (for the time being) any pop-up blockers that you have enabled.
When trying to activate MS Reader, it may prompt you with a message that says something like “To proceed, you must have the ActiveX control installed on this machine”. The download for ActiveX will be offered in a small, pop-up toolbar looking thing that will appear in between the webpage and your browser toolbar. It’s easy to miss, so be on the look out. Just click where is says “Click here to download the ActiveX control”. Then proceed with your activation activities.
