Oregon-based POWELL'S BOOKS comes to Austin in search of books
May 26-29, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at Doubletree Guest Suites Austin 303 W. 15th
Street MAY 4, 2005, PORTLAND, OR While thousands of people will spend Memorial Day weekend traveling or enjoying backyard barbecues, Powell's Books is banking on at least a few more thousand lining up at the Doubletree Hotel with books to sell. The Portland, Oregon-based independent bookseller has been traveling beyond the Rose City's limits to build its inventory of used books, and Austin's high concentration of students and bibliophiles made it an essential stop. The event will be open to the public, and sellers may choose to receive cash or store credit toward more books at Powells.com. As an independent clicks-and-mortar bookseller, Powell's plays the dual role of traditional bookstore, with six locations in the Portland area, and an online destination that serves millions of customers worldwide. In addition to carrying new books, Powell's purchases more than 5,000 used volumes each day in its stores. However, facing increased demand, the company must take a broader approach to acquiring used books. A recent IPSOS Book-Trends study reveals a "cultural shift," in which the demand for used editions is growing faster than that for new books. Taking into account that 95% of all books are out-of-print, Powell's is anticipating this market trend to continue. Specific types of books in demand are: hardcovers, trade paperbacks, current editions of textbooks, technical books, libros en espanol and rare or out-of-print editions. Books that will NOT be accepted are: family Bibles, old encyclopedia sets, book club editions, mass market paperbacks, product manuals, and magazines.
