Powell's Books Beaverton
Location to Expand and Relocate
Independent bookseller doubles retail
space in Portland's western suburb
June 8, 2006, Portland, OR Powell's
Books today announced plans to relocate its Beaverton, Oregon, store, expanding
and improving the company's west-side location. The company signed a lease agreement
in May with C.E. John Company, Inc., for retail space in the newly renovated
Cedar Hills Crossing shopping center, with plans to open the new Beaverton store
during November 2006.
The new 32,500-square-foot location will offer customers double the retail
space of Powell's current Beaverton store while offering upgraded amenities and
more areas for book browsing. Powell's is pleased to join the company of other
local businesses at Cedar Hills Crossing, including New Seasons, McMenamins,
and G.I. Joe's.
"Relocating and building a new store at Cedar Hills Crossing gives us a chance
to better serve our customers by offering a larger selection of used and new
books," Emily Powell reflected, alongside her father Michael Powell, the president
of Powell's Books, Inc.
Ms. Powell who will ultimately preside over company operations states, "We
plan to make the new store a vital community resource, with a spacious children's
section and a large, comfortable area for author appearances and community events.
Our Beaverton customers have been very supportive of us over the past twenty-two
years, and we look forward to thrilling them here for many years to come."
The new Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing demonstrates Powell's continuing
commitment to Beaverton. Cedar Hills Crossing, currently in the final stages
of a more than $35-million renovation, is a 590,000-square-foot community shopping
center located between Southwest Jenkins Road and Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard.
"We are excited about this opportunity to bring Powell's Books to Cedar Hills
Crossing. Powell's Books is an icon in the Portland metropolitan area and will
be a great addition to our tenant mix," stated Scott K. Lindgren, Vice President,
Real Estate with C.E. John Company, Inc.
Powell's Books only major location change in more than twenty years was prompted
by a redevelopment of the retail space it has occupied since 1984, across the
highway from Washington Square Mall. Powell's Books in Beaverton brings the unique
flavor of Powell's downtown locations to the west side, offering used, new, and
rare books. The Beaverton store also offers an especially wide selection of technical
and children's books, in response to the interests of the surrounding community.
The current store location will remain open for business until November 2006.
