Exclusive Grateful Dead CD available with Phil Lesh book via partnership with online bookseller Powells.com
March 29, 2005, Portland, OR Independent bookseller Powells.com and
Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh today announced an exclusive partnership
for the distribution of a CD featuring previously unreleased Grateful Dead
tracks. The disc will come free with purchase of Lesh's new book, Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead (Little, Brown &
Co., April 2005). A bookplate signed by Lesh and designed by Gary Houston
will accompany each book and compact disc.
The CD, produced by Lesh, includes four previously unreleased Grateful Dead
tracks, along with the bassist's comments on these four songs. Of perhaps
greatest interest to all Dead Heads is the first-ever official release of
the long-lost Grateful Dead original song "Cardboard Cowboy," presented
here in its 1966 studio version.
Additionally, the disc includes the last-ever song performed by the
Grateful Dead, "Box Of Rain," from the July 9, 1995 concert at Soldier
Field in Chicago, along with Phil's poignant memories of this performance
and that tour. Also on the CD are two outstanding jams, one highlighting
Brent Mydland's soulful playing, and the other focusing on Bruce Hornsby's
inspired contributions to the band in the fall of 1990.
In Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead, Lesh offers
the first behind-the-scenes history of the Dead a story no one will ever
know as he does. From their first gigs to the legendary Acid Tests, in San
Francisco's Summer of Love, at Woodstock, Monterey, Altamont, and the
Pyramids, the Dead have been at the center of rock's defining moments. Phil
Lesh tells what it has been like to live at the heart of this whirlwind,
making uncompromisingly original music with bandmates Bob Weir, Bill
Kreutzmann, Pigpen, Mickey Hart, and especially Jerry Garcia, the
charismatic, enigmatic soul of the band.
"We are thrilled that Phil has given us the privilege of offering this rare
treasure to our customers," says Dave Weich, Director of Development for
Powell's Books. Searching for the Sound is now available for preorder at
Powells.com for $25.95. The CD and bookplate will ship with orders of the
book while supplies last.
