Powells.com to Unveil New Web Site July 1 Bookseller Rings in New Fiscal Year
with New Look, More Books
JUNE 28, 2005, PORTLAND, OR
Powells.com will unveil its new web site on July
1, the first day of the bookseller's new fiscal year. Featuring a sleek, updated
look, a bestseller list that updates hourly, and a reorganization of its
literary content, the new site highlights a stronger focus on recommended
reading and a clean, user-friendly design. Customers will also find a fully
integrated shopping cart for convenient viewing from any page, and upgraded
search technology that delivers more relevant results.
Following a year of unprecedented growth, in which new book sales are up 21% and
site traffic has increased to two million unique visitors monthly, the redesign
is one of numerous changes at Powells.com. Online offerings have recently
doubled to four million books, and the company plans to further expand its
inventory in the coming months. CEO of Development Miriam Sontz is optimistic
about the year ahead. "The Internet continues to change the way we do business,"
says Sontz. "We've learned that, to be a neighborhood bookstore on a global
level, we have to evolve with our customers' needs. It's exciting to see where
that will take us."
Powells.com and Powell's Books
An independent bookseller since 1971, Powell's serves the Portland, Oregon area
with four general bookstores and two specialty stores. Its flagship store takes
up an entire city block, offering 68,000 square feet of used, new, rare, and
out-of-print books. Online since 1994, Powells.com offers the combined inventory
of its six retail locations and five warehouses about four million books in
all. The site features exclusive author interviews and essays, as well as a
stable of internationally respected book reviewers and content partners. Forbes magazine crowned the site a "Forbes Favorite," applauding its "huge selection of
new, used and rare books, all swathed in smart content."
