Powell's participates in OSCON 2005
Bookseller supports use of Open Source Software
AUGUST 1 , 2005, PORTLAND, OR
Powell's Books, the Portland-based independent bookseller and official bookstore of OSCON 2005, is preparing for the O'Reilly Open Source Conference being hosted in its home town the first week of August. In addition to serving as the official bookstore for the event and sponsoring a Technical Books booth, the entire Powells.com programming staff will attend the conference. Darin Sennett, Director of Web Stuff, humorously lamented, "Each year Powells.com is devastated by OSCON because all our programmers attend and we have no programming staff for a week." The company is committed to having its programmers participate in OSCON, much to their excitement, because the Powells.com culture is so similar to the OSCON culture.
Powells.com, first launched in 1994, has been created and designed exclusively using open source programs such as Perl, PHP, and MySQL; the company also serves the site on the Apache web server. The company has rallied around the use of open source software, enabling Powells.com to grow into one of the most successful underdog endeavors in the industry while remaining profitable through the dot-com fallout -- even thriving in its wake.
Powell's Technical Books will have a large presence at the show, promoting the latest technical books and Technica, its monthly e-newsletter which offers updates on the best new and used deals in technical books, Q&As with world renowned authors, special timely features, and more. Customers can subscribe at http://www.powells.com/technica.html.
An independent bookseller based in Portland, Oregon, Powells.com offers the inventory of six Powell's brick-and-mortar stores and five warehouses approximately 4.8 million books in all. Online since 1994, Powells.com has developed a unique business model based on a broad inventory of new, used, rare, and out-of print books, a unique pricing structure that often undercuts competitors, and a stable of internationally respected book reviewers and content partners. The award-winning site features timely content from the Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, the New Republic, the Christian Science Monitor, Salon.com, Utne, and others, plus staff picks, monthly contests, and exclusive author interviews and essays. Forbes magazine crowned Powells.com a "Forbes Favorite," applauding its "huge selection of new, used and rare books, all swathed in smart content."
