Portland Farmers Market and Powell's Books

Partner to Offer Market Shoppers Books at Saturday PSU Market

April 7, 2009, Portland, OR—The Portland Farmers Market and Powell's Books have partnered to provide Portlanders new and used books at Portland Farmers Market's PSU location. Powell's will set up a 10-foot by 20-foot booth featuring a curated selection of new and used books the last Saturday of each month, beginning April 25 through October 24. The collections will focus on topics that are relevant to the market season, for example seed gardening in the spring, barbequing in the summer, and preserving in the fall.

"Two iconic Portland organizations are coming together to provide our shoppers a wonderful collection of books to help market-goers prepare and store the region's bounty and grow some of their own food," says Ann Forsthoefel, Portland Farmers Market executive director. "This partnership with Powell's provides resources to allow our community to get the most of out of the market throughout the spring, summer and fall, and to help build a vibrant local food economy."

Michael Lamb, customer services manager of Powell's Books is also excited about the partnership, "The Portland Farmers Market and Powell's Books are a perfect match, bringing together two of Portland's greatest loves: food and books. Our participation in the farmers market is natural extension of our sustainability efforts and that is part of the reason why we'll offer used books at the market."

About Portland Farmers Market
Founded in 1992, Portland Farmers Market, a nonprofit 501(c)6, brings the best of the country to the heart of the city by supporting the region's farmers and creating vibrant urban marketplaces where growers and consumers come together. This nonprofit's staff of four full-time and four part-time employees aims to grow, nourish and inspire the community by staging weekly markets in five different locations throughout the Portland area from March until December. In addition to managing the markets, Portland Farmers Market has been an early leader in Portland's sustainability movement and has served as an incubator for small businesses. With more than 250 vendors from Oregon and Washington — including farms, bakeries, nurseries, meat and seafood providers, cheese makers and specialty food producers — Portland Farmers Market is a true showplace of Northwest agriculture.
