This text serves as an excellent introduction to Orthodox Christianity and the thought of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 18th-19th centuries, as well as a rich sense of peasant life in 1800s Russia. Developing after the tradition of the 'Desert Fathers,' the narrative of the anonymous 'Pilgrim' connects life's experiences with the spiritual lessons he learns on his journey. R.M. French's translation captures hints of the style and beauty of the Russian language, while still providing an easy-to-understand, contemporary language.
I would readily recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about Eastern Orthodoxy, especially as an introduction leading into more central texts, such as the Philokalia or Ignatius Brianchaninov's On The Prayer of Jesus.
