Synopsis
Originally a thesis, this is a detailed analysis of the function of three principals which were established by Augustus in order to determine his relationship with the people of his empire: restitutio, saeculum and pater patriae. Chapters examine, for example, Augustus' creation of a new calendar for games, the private and public role of the father and the contrasting nature of Augustus' rule in Italy, the Western provinces and elsewhere in the empire.
