Publisher Comments:
Ayun Halliday's fourth book, Dirty Sugar Cookies, takes readers into the unpredictable mind and comical experiences of a true anti-foodie, giving even the most hopeless cooks a moment of relief from self-criticism, and the least discriminating eaters a reality check. Halliday started out a repressed picky eater without so much as a single fast-food-loving sibling to save her from the gourmet ambitions of a mother whose recipe for Far East Celery once received favorable mention in the Indianapolis Star. Her palate has since expanded to the degree that she'll fork down anything from chili-smothered insects that pass for an exotic destination's local delicacies to a peanut found wedged between the cushions of a theater seat.
From summer camp's unlimited Pop-Tarts to the post-coital breakfasts of a well-traveled actress-waitress and the frustrating payback of cooking for some finicky offspring of the author's own, Dirty Sugar Cookies is an omnivorous, hilarious chronicle of culinary awakening.
Review:
"Ayun infuses her stories with all the elements of a great meal. She can be sweet, sour, hot, and salty, all while being funny and real." Beth Lisick, author of Everybody into the Pool
Review:
"Finally, food stories for the rest of us! For those of us who fondly remember our most demented culinary ecperiences — the crazy Betty Crocker concoctions we made as kids, the creepy dinners we loved, that Moosewood Cookbook phase we went through in college — Ayun Halliday is our dirty sugar mama!" Wendy McClure, author of I'm Not the New Me and The Amazing Mackerel Pudding Plan
Review:
"Dirty Sugar Cookies is a smart, irreverent, and hilarious look at life, love, motherhood, and all the living that goes on around the meals we eat." Samantha Gillison, author of The Kind of America and the food blog Lunch for Two
Synopsis:
How does a picky eater morph into a low-budget epicure whose digestive indiscretions are a matter of public record? Just how far can a pregnant woman stray from the Best Odds Diet until a food-borne bacterial infection lands her in the hospital? Can a serial monogamist really keep track of every post-coital breakfast she's ever enjoyed?
An omnivorous, rollicking chronicle of culinary awakening, Dirty Sugar Cookies is an oil-splattered, accidentally-dropped-on-the-floor, self-mocking love letter to everything Ayun Halliday has ever eaten — and a few of the things she wishes she hadn't.
About the Author

If you were a picky eater, this is the book for you. Ayun Halliday speaks to the (former) picky eater in all of us, relating hilarious childhood stories about driving her parents and grandparents wild with her eating habits and how her own daughter now does the same to her. I was awash in my own childhood memories as I blazed through this book, laughing out loud the whole way.
