Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Throughout seven prior editions, "CTP" has defined the field of psychiatry. Every edition has garnered accolades from the highest levels of psychiatry, and established the text as the authoritative text for the specialty. Carefully edited to include definitions and diagnostic criteria of mental disorders used in ICD-10 and the DSM-IV-TR, the Eighth Edition features approximately 450 contributors and section editors. A wealth of new information and updated coverage makes the Eighth Edition an essential cornerstone for every psychiatric practice. New information includes information on post-traumatic stress disorder after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and updated information on the many new psychotropic drugs.

Book News Annotation:

The 7th ed., of 2000, was recommended by Brandon/Hill as an initial purchase and as part of a minimal core collection in a small medical library. The 8th edition has been substantially revised and expanded, with over half of the contributors new to this edition. Fifty new sections have been added, with topics that include genome, transcriptome, and proteome; transgenic models of behavior; neural basis of substance abuse and dependence; neuropsychiatric aspects of prion disease; radiotracer imaging in neuropsychiatric disorders; sexual addiction; normality and mental health; sociopolitical trends in mental health care; and four new sections on geriatric psychiatry--sexuality and aging, delirium, genetics of late-life degenerative disorders, and counseling and support needs of dementia caregivers. Many chapters and sections have been expanded, including those on anxiety disorders, brain models of mind, biology of memory, and animal research. New chapters on child psychiatry have been added, including depressive disorders and suicide, early-onset bipolar disorders, neuroimaging, and the impact of terrorism on children. The editors are psychiatrists who teach and practice at the New York U. School of Medicine, Tisch Hospital, and Bellevue Hospital Center.
