Those of you who are tired of waiting for a new Harry Potter novel might do well to pick up this little gem. Young Coraline finds a secret passage that leads her to a living nightmare. This book is scary, but not too scary, a little creepy, and very funny. Kind of like a good old-fashioned ghost story or fairy tale. The wonderful illustrations by Dave McKean bring Gaiman's tale vividly to life.

Review-a-Day   (What is Review-a-Day?)

"Coraline is an entertaining, more than competent story....The plot moves at a steady clip, although the first half is stronger due to the excitement of Coraline's discoveries....Children reading Coraline...will be drawn into the story and enjoy its creepy imagery. Things that cause adults to shudder often bring a grin to the lips of a child. It's a fine introduction to Neil Gaiman's fantasy writing, likely to inspire further reading." Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When Coraline steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own (only better), things seem marvelous.

But there's another mother there, and another father, and they want her to stay and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.

Coraline will have to fight with all her wit and courage if she is to save herself and return to her ordinary life.

Review:

"This book will send a shiver down your spine, out through your toes, and into a taxi to the airport. It has the delicate horror of the finest fairy tales, and it is a masterpiece." Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series and co-author of Good Omens

Review:

"This book tells a fascinating and disturbing story that frightened me nearly to death. Unless you want to find yourself hiding under your bed, with your thumb in your mouth, trembling with fear and making terrible noises, I suggest that you step very slowly away from this book and go find another source of amusement, such as investigating an unsolved crime or making a small animal out of yarn." Lemony Snicket, author of The Series of Unfortunate Events

When they say that this book is a modern day "Alice in Wonderland" they don't lie. This book may seem deceivingly easy to read, but the simplicity belies a world so full of depth and color that even a well seasoned adult wanted to re-read it. You find yourself loving and admiring Coraline as she shows an adventurous spirit and purity of heart that many of us strive to obtain. Neil Gaiman is without a doubt one of the best writers in his (hard to identify) genre, and his foray into children's fiction is nothing less splendid than his adult works. Buy this book for a child, or just for your inner child, trust me you won't be disappointed.
