Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The only one-volume edition containing all 1,775 of Emily Dickinson's poems.

Only eleven of Emily Dickinson's poems were published prior to her death in 1886; the startling originality of her work doomed it to obscurity in her lifetime. Early posthumously published collections — some of them featuring liberally "edited" versions of the poems — did not fully and accurately represent Dickinson's bold experiments in prosody, her tragic vision, and the range of her intellectual and emotional explorations. Not until the 1955 publication of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, a three-volume critical edition compiled by Thomas H. Johnson, were readers able for the first time to assess, understand, and appreciate the whole of Dickinson's extraordinary poetic genius.

This book, a distillation of the three-volume Complete Poems, brings together the original texts of all 1,775 poems that Emily Dickinson wrote.

Review:

"With its chronological arrangement of the poems, this volume becomes more than just a collection; it is at the same time a poetic biography of the thoughts and feelings of a woman whose beauty was deep and lasting." San Francisco Chronicle

Synopsis:

Here is the real Emily Dickinson — the only comprehensive and reliably authoritative trade editions of the poet's work.
While it is today universally acknowledged that Dickinson was a poet of the highest order, the startling originality of her poems doomed her work to obscurity in her own lifetime. Early posthumous publication efforts — including the 1924 Complete Poems edited by the poet's niece and published by Little, Brown — did not fully and fairly represent Dickinson's bold experiments in prosody, her tragic vision, or the range of her intellectual and emotional explorations. Not until the publication of Harvard University Press's 1955 The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, comprising three hardcover volumes edited by Thomas H. Johnson, were readers able to understand and appreciate Dickinson's entire oeuvre.
These books are also the fruit of Thomas H. Johnson's prodigious scholarship. The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson distills the three-volume hardcover Complete, bringing together in a single volume all 1,775 poems that Dickinson wrote. Final Harvest is the only truly comprehensive selection of Dickinson's verse: 576 poems that trace the arc of her development as a writer.
A feast for all who love poetry, these are the standard texts against which all other Dickinson collections must be measured.
