Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

A Duke U. professor of philosophy explains why we need an epistemology of scientific theorizing, the structure and metaphysics of theories, and discontents with "under-determinism" (inexact laws). The book includes examples, chapter overviews and questions, further reading lists, and a glossary of terms.

Synopsis:

Science is perhaps the sole distinctively western institution adopted by all cultures who have come in contact with it. And yet its scope, nature and methods have been contested throughout its history. Philosophy of Science identifies the profound philosophical problems that science raises through an examination of enduring questions about its nature, methods, and justification. Coming to grips with the nature of explanation, laws and causation, among others, turns out to be a matter of facing the same questions that Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant and their successors grappled with.

Synopsis:

Identifies the profound philosophical problems that science raises through an examination of enduring questions about its nature, methods and justification. This introductory text should be of value to both students of the philosophy of science and to students of science.

Philosophy of science is not simply important as a dicipline, it is important since it helps to put the entire sciences in proper perspective thereby preventing the temptation towards scientism. This book will generally help the students grasp what the debates are and help the general reader who will like know what is going on in this very intersting field. I will recommend the book any time any day. Please get a copy and read and let other have it too.
