Publisher Comments:

The Red Book is nothing less than a spiritual fire starter. Named for the author's original red journal of sublime explorations, this powerful and provocative book inspires women to take spirituality back into their own hands by connecting more authentically with the divine spark blazing deep inside them. The Red Book is for the smart, gutsy, spiritually curious woman who might not see her colorful modern life (or stylish wardrobe) reflected in most typical books about spirituality.

The Red Book mixes Hindu Tantra and Zen Buddhism, Rumi and Carl Jung, goddesses and psychics, creative journaling and energy work, sex and dreams and intuition and more, all interspersed with hilarious personal anecdotes, realistic examples and invaluable exercises. Author Sera Beak's unique hybrid perspective bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary spiritual ideas, all the while encouraging her readers to have fun breaking the rules. The Red Book offers a stripped-down, re-energized, real-life experience of the divine that puts women more closely in touch with their true selves so they can live more consciously and deliberately and begin making clearer choices across the board, from careers to relationships, politics to pop culture, and everything in between.

Review:

"Beak, a religious scholar and writer for the San Francisco Chronicle Web site, , presents a brief but potent book focused on invigorating spirituality in the 20- or 30-something American woman. She vividly criticizes the patriarchal interpretation that has dominated most belief systems for centuries, and then quickly moves on to create her own feminist one. Beak encourages her female audience to do so as well, with their own 'red book' modeled after hers, which was first given her as a birthday gift by her sister after their grandfather's death. Beak initially rejected the idea of keeping a journal, but soon found herself writing down prayers, recording dreams and in essence keeping a spiritual scrapbook. Avoiding the typical sentimentality, Beak's vision is a modern, femme fatale spirituality. The book lives up to its 'unorthodox' subtitle, advocating that young women search for the spiritual in all things, even sex (memorably in a chapter called 'Open Up and Say Ahh'). Beak calls herself a 'spiritual cowgirl,' taking her readers along for the ride. Her writing is probably too brazen for more conservative spiritual readers, but she displays poignant insights throughout. (June 16)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

I bought Ms. Beak's book at a time when I was trying to figure out how to nurture my spirituality without joining an organized religion that I didn't completely agree with. This book did ignite my divine spark, it re-ignited my curiosities in the human spirit and was a kick to read. She is very well-educated on religion/ spirituality and her advice comes from experience and knowledge. I would recommend this book to women of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. Fantastic.
