The Crimson Petal and the White is a stand out of the first decade of the twenty-first century. The writing transports the reader back to late 19th century Victorian England and into the life of Sugar, a whore living at the edges of society and struggling to find a better way of life. Through the historical fiction lens, Faber has created a gripping page-turner and a sly feminist meditation on sex, money and power.

Despite being 800+ pages, this books is a page-turner, and it's a very good read. It gives you all of the grimy, dirty details about the time period (some of which you may not have wanted to know), and the characters are detailed and real. My main complaint is that the ending doesn't really seem to wrap anything up or bring the threads of the story together - it just stops. Still, all in all, definitely worth reading.
