If you stop trying new things, you might as well just stop.
Ellen Ivers has it all: a nice house, great kids, and a husband who loves her no matter how much she’s let herself go. There’s just one problem: Ellen is completely, utterly bored. Maybe it’s a mid-life crisis, or maybe it’s just time to make a change. Ellen starts taking care of herself and decides to start trying new things. As the pounds melt away and she begins to feel more comfortable in her own skin, Ellen’s cousin prompts the former writer to enter a blog competition.
At first Ellen is hesitant; after all, what exactly is she supposed to write about? But soon the words start flowing and Ellen gains confidence, in part because of the attention she’s getting from her cousin’s new neighbor, handsome detective Ben Campbell. Both Ellen and Ben are married with kids, and they know their friendship is heading down a dangerous path. As her attraction to Ben grows and her blog starts attracting a lot of interest, everything else in Ellen’s world begins to unravel. Now, she finds herself wondering if the life she has is what she really wants, or if something new is exactly what she needs…
Review
“Something New is for any woman who has ever flirted with the possibility of a different life. Or who has ever flirted, period. Janis Thomas is spot-on in capturing how it feels to be an upper-middle class suburban mom who longs for...something more. She writes with sparkle and humor."—Sally Koslow, author of The Late, Lamented Molly Marx

Synopsis
Life s sweetest moments happen when you least expect them...
When Ruby McMillan s husband announces one morning that he s dumping her for another woman, she s unable to decide which indignity stings the most: the dissolution of their eighteen-year marriage or the deflation of her white-chocolate souffle with raspberry Grand Marnier sauce. Without a good-bye to their two teenaged children, Walter leaves Ruby to cope with her ruined dessert, an unpaid mortgage, and her failing bakery.
With only royal icing holding her together, Ruby still manages to pick herself up and move on, subsidizing her income with an extra job as a baking instructor, getting a my-husband s-gone makeover, and even flirting with her gorgeous mortgage broker, Jacob Salt. For as long as she can remember, Ruby has done what s practical, eschewing far-fetched dreams and true love in favor of stability. But suddenly single again at the age of forty-four, she s beginning to discover that life is most delicious when you stop following a recipe and just live."
