Best known as Bristol Palin’s baby daddy and Sarah Palin’s favorite whipping boy, Levi Johnston sets out to clear his name, shed light on the woman in the bear costume, and take us all up to Wasilla to see what it is like to grow up in Alaska.
Small town hockey player and Governor Palin’s almost son-in-law, Levi Johnston is only seventeen when Palin becomes the vice presidential nominee. Levi’s dream of becoming a back-country guide is lost, and the media has latched onto him, his girl, and her baby bump. Even when the McCain-Palin presidential bid falls short, the intrigue continues. The once flirty Sarah stops winking at Levi and instead begins to vilify him as Bristol piles on. Bullied, lied about, outspent in the courts when he attempts to bond with his new son, this book is Johnston’s unblinking answer to the mercurial woman who made him a household name and the most hated man in Alaska.
Johnston, ever honest, had a unique window into Palintology at a critical time; he sat at the kitchen table and paid attention. Those who love Sarah will read about their idol, who actually does quip, “You betcha.” Those who detest her—for few hold middle ground—will find that her public views often don’t jibe with her personal actions.
The result is a humorous, poignant book about two individuals, two families, and the country we live in. Deer in the Headlights combines the intrigue and gossip of Andrew Young’s The Politician with the wit and relevancy of Justin Halpren’s Sh*t My Dad Says.
Johnston is in the midst of shooting a reality show for CMT called Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office, which will show him balancing daily life while running for office in Wasilla and being a father to his son, Tripp.

Synopsis
Best known as Bristol Palin's baby daddy and Sarah Palin's favorite whipping boy, Levi Johnston sets out to clear his name and--with any luck--end his run as Alaska's most hated man.
Promising hockey player and Governor Palin's almost son-in-law, Levi Johnston was eighteen when Palin became the vice presidential nominee. His unique place as Bristol's live-in boyfriend provided him a true insider's view of what was going on behind closed doors. And how Sarah's public views were often at odds with her home values. It makes it all the more curious that Sarah eventually turned her anger directly on Levi, after losing her ticket to the White House
After being bullied, lied about, and outspent in the courts when he attempted to bond with his new son, Tripp, Levi Johnston now is ready to set the record straight.
Deer in the Headlights is a poignant, at times very funny, and fascinating tale of a boy thrust into the media spotlight and now figuring out how to be an adult and a dad. Johnston, ever honest, had a unique window into Palintology at a critical time; he sat in the family's living room and paid attention. Not bitter and never petty, Levi shares his story.
As Lawrence O'Donnell of MSNBC so aptly put it: "I love that kid. He's honest, he's straightforward, he's not embarrassed."
