The frigid winter months are mighty slow in the PI biz for Julie Collins and her partner, Kevin Wells, until the duo is hired to investigate an assisted-living facility where the client's grandfather resides. In recent months, after a mysterious new caretaker arrives, not only has the client's grandfather become combative, but large amounts of cash have been withdrawn from his bank account, and the old man has been caught sneaking out of the facility on numerous occasions. Julie's preliminary investigation raises red flags, but they cannot be addressed before disaster strikes and the elderly man is found frozen to death more than a mile from the complex. To further complicate matters, Julie ends up stuck with her father at the Collins ranch during a raging blizzard that ends with the discovery of a murder. As the bodies pile up around her, Julie wonders if the unpredictable and deadly South Dakota weather isn't the only threat to her life.
