By way of a disclaimer, I worked with Judith on her first novel, "Crescent Veil", a fast-paced fictional tale of a hunt for a terrorist who found the missing WMD in Irag. That relationship allowed me to access the advanced copy as well as the final copy of "In His Stead: A Father's War". I was struck by the maturation of Judith's voice in this new novel as well as her unique approach to this novel of a father's love for his family during wartime. Judith's pages are filled with living, breathing, loving, and hurting characters that you'd find in your own neighborhood. As we learn about retired Army Ranger Thomas Lane's past, the lost of his eldest son in Afghanistan, and the looming deployment of his last son, we see a man who will do whatever it takes to find a way to protect his son. In every turn of a phrase Judith presents hope and inspiration for all her readers to grab onto. And her action scenes are spot-on, engaging and will draw you in with each turn of the pages, whether in a small Pennsylvania town or the mountains of Afghanistan. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
