Synopses & Reviews
In a remote and mountainous part of Europe, a priest keeps a dark secret beneath his chapela prisoner. Even the holy man does not know how long he has been there—hundreds of years, perhaps, or even longer. The priest's fear is that anyone in his parish would ever come in contact with his mysterious and unholy charge. But what happens is even worse than he could have ever imagined. His lovely young daughter Milja, whose innocence and devotion to God he prizes over all else, trails her father into the cavern and catches a glimpse of the prisoner, a beautiful being like the most handsome of men, and yet not. She looks into his eyes and sees pain and wisdom and eternity. Unable to keep away from this silent creature chained to an altar stone, she is torn between family loyalty and her growing connection to their prisoner. One day her father discovers their forbidden intimacy and sends Milja off to America to be raised by her aunt in Boston. Cover Him in Darkness is a dark and thrilling story of an archangel banished from heaven and the human woman with whom he falls in love.

"Calling
Cover Him With Darkness a romance is like calling a Lamborghini a cute little car. Janine Ashbless has broken every unwritten rule of writing romance and makes it work most spectacularly-it's dark and gritty and so beautifully written that the words are pure poetry."

"Janine Ashbless has long been a master at conjuring the erotic in myths and legends. Now she's taking on religion and all I can say is wow. Just wow! What is evil? What is good? Can the faithful have completely missed the point? Sexy food for thought: Cover Him With Darkness is an intensely wild ride."

"This book was truly a fantastic read. Janine Ashbless amazed me over and over again with her presentation of the sort of tribal religious mystique of Montenegro and especially with her detail of its jagged scenery. I felt I was on a tour and actually bearing witness to the stunning mountainous landscape--I walked along the narrowest of goat trails, could feel the drafty little church atop its cold mountain, taste the bean soup... and the dream sequences between it all?... help me. No... Gimme."

"I fell in love with Cover Him With Darkness just from the synopsis alone. This book did not disappoint me at all. I had to keep reading to see what would happen next. Cover Him With Darkness was a very well written book. Please read Janine Ashbless because her writing captivates you from the very first page. I am looking forward to reading what else she comes up with. In the story, Milja was brought up to protect the being that her family has protected for generations. The only problem is, she becomes fascinated with him and feels bad for how he is treated, and she wants to help him. After her father passes away, she finally releases the being, but it brings repercussions. She must choose; the archangel she set free, or the people who want him back underground."-Night Owl Reviews Top Pick!

"Ashbless' tale of ancient texts and ruthless churchmen at first seems of a piece with some Dan Brown thriller, though Ashbless is a much better writer--certainly far more intelligent and imaginative than the purveyor of The Da Vinci Code. A more apt comparison might be early Anne Rice; in scale and pacing this novel is pleasingly reminiscent of books like Queen of the Damned, without the tiresome existential inner monologues or cloying narrative excess that overtook Rice after the first blush of literary and financial success."

"How one writer can produce story after story to such a very high standard is awesome - she puts other writers to shame. There are not enough superlatives to describe how I felt about this collection; sensual, sexy, erotic, by turns both dark and exciting, enticing, breathtaking. Believe me, if you love reading great erotic literature then you simply have to add this to your collection. I just hope that Black Lace can urge the author to pen another equally fine collection soon, as nothing else now compares. The very best."

"Deeply erotic ... I thought I was done with the whole vampire thing, but Janine Ashbless writes compelling stories that explore the essence of human nature, even among the fanged."

"Janine Ashbless does an amazing job combining innocence and darkness in this story. Cover Him With Darkness is the perfect combination of romance, erotica, suspense, and action. It had me up all night reading. The extra coffee needed in the mornings was well worth it."

"The prose is beautiful. I thought the book was very well written. I love the mystery of who the prisoner is before it's revealed and the lore surrounding it. The story is very compelling and unpredictable... While this is considered a romance, it's not terribly romantic."
--Buffy's Ramblings
"It exceeded everything I could have wanted. Reading the novel was like being consumed. I am not exaggerating, there were times I lifted my head from it and I was gasping for air. It is that intense."
