Synopses & Reviews
Shirley MacLaine has finally found the love of a lifetime. Not in the arms of a new man, but in the furry bundle of charms that is her terrier. In "Out on a Leash, the award-winning actress whose blockbuster books have gone where no one has gone before treads once again on new ground, offering a dog's-eye view of companionship. With her winning canine ways and an endless wellspring of love with no strings attached, Terry has succeeded in doing what no man before her ever could: slowing Shirley's peripatetic world travels, shifting her global axis to hearth and home. Through Shirley's eyes we see how Terry provides a portal for exploring the nature and meaning of love in her mistress's life. But in true MacLaine style, we also hear from Terry, whose first-person narratives offer a unique--and uniquely intimate--portrait of Shirley: the free spirit who has never truly thrown caution to the wind, the sensitive soul who continually probes the deeper nature of reality, even the late-night TV news junkie. Between these two extraordinary beings exists a bond that goes beyond obvious affection--a bond that, as Shirley speculates, must have been forged in previous lifetimes that go back as far as ancient Egypt. As thoughtful and warm as any book this author has ever written, "Out on a Leash is a wise memoir of one of the most beloved women of our time. It is vintage MacLaine fare, and sure to enchant her legions of devoted fans.
