Captain Hastings comes to Styles to visit hi friend Hercule Poirot who has told Hastings that he is confined to wheelchair by arthritis. He learns from Poirot that there is murderer in the house where 5 murders were already commited. Poirot indentified murderer simply as X and Hastings is supposed to help him fond out who the X is. Hastings makes some observations in next couple days. He also talks to his daughter Judith and she tells him that she loves this man. Hastings doesn't like that. One morning they find Norton, a bird watcher, dead in his locked room with bullet-hole in the centre of his forehead. Hastings tells Poirot that he saw Norton going to his bathroom the night before. They trying to solve this mystery. Poirot dies of his heartproblem. Hastings gets the indictaions Poirot left for him and is trying to find out some more iformation about who the X could be.
He finds this letter where Poirot describes the whole story about the murder of Norton and all other events that happened in the house. He explains the reason why he, Hercule Poirot, killed Norton and how he did that.
I like very much the surprising ending. Just the last couple pages explain the whole story.
Excellent detective story.
