I myself as a reader would fully recommend this book to anyone that is even considering reading this. This work of fantasy puts a modern spin on a classic mythological story, with a mix of English folklore and modern societies. With references anywhere from Robin Hood to the Cold War, this book brings up modern issues in the context of young Arthur’s life, showing White’s opinions but leaving us in the clear to make our own. A fun pleasure to read, yet a learning experience along the way. The greatest experience in this novel is the twist that White puts into the folklore of King Author, while still leaving the details that are well known to all that have heard this story as a kid. He still has how as a boy he was called Wart, affectionately as “it more or less rhymed with Art, which was short for his real name” (3), and how he had an older brother named Kay who was destine for all the greatness while Wart was destine to be nothing more than his squire. It had Merlyn as his teacher and wizard who taught Wart all he need to know while enjoying the uses of magic. And of course it still had Excalibur and the stone that only Wart can pull it out of. Yet that is where the similarities end and the fun begins. Wart goes on so many adventures that boarder on the ridiculous, meeting Robin Wood, yes Wood, “what else should un be, seeing as he rules ‘em” (93), becoming different animals and adapting to their society, and living in a castle with knights, kings, and wizards. These adventures are unique to White’s mind and all give Wart and the reader an important lesson that will stick with them through life. These adventures include, saving friends from a castle made of food that only kids can enter, flying over the North Sea, causing a war among ants, and chasing after a bird that constantly flies out of reach. All of which are unique from the Arthurian legends yet considered necessary for Wart’s education as “pure science, the only purity there is” (186) is taught best through experience. The novel has a sense of belonging in a fantasy world as it has almost anything ever included in one. Knights, wizards, magical swords, unicorns, dragons, intelligent creatures, and “there was a greater marvel still. The weather behaved itself” (137), making this novel interesting for any fantasy lover. The diction is simple and only changes a few times when there is someone with less education making it a light read. The setting is perfectly described and White doesn't spend much time on the pointless, skipping months and years at a time to get to the next event he considers important. This is great especially for someone like me who has ADD and normally can’t sit still long enough to read a book. Besides this brisk speed the book is detailed enough and layered enough that one can spend days on one passage or adventure to see all that White is trying to say. Making this a novel that will stay in your library as a book to reread at a different time to see what a new perspective gifts the book. With that in mind I hope that all will give the book a shot and see what you can see in Wart’s incredible journey to become King of all of England.
