This is the first of a series of well-written and well-plotted detective stories, that happen to be translated from the Swedish. The main character is so well depicted that I know him. What he goes though is the human condition (e.g. divorce, worrying about an elderly parent who is perhaps losing it, improving his relationship with his adult daugther, dealing with long, bleak, cold winters) while still solving complicated murders and relating to colleagues at work. I am currently reading the eighth mystery in the series and am as fascinated as ever. I highly recommend reading them in order because of Kurt Wallander's development.
