About the Author
Anna Sewell (1820-78) felt very strongly about cruelty to animals and wrote
Black Beauty to persuade people to be kinder to horses. It was her only book and took her six years to write because of illness. She died soon after it appeared, and since then more than thirty million copies have been sold.
