Breakthrough Prayer explains the principles and lays out a vision that can revolutionize our lives, enabling us to receive all that God has for us. Jim Cymbala believes that many people are missing the great things God wants to do in their lives because they don't know how to receive answers to prayer. The purpose of this book is not to offer a step-by-step guide on how to pray but to inspire people to greater hope as they see the tremendous potential of prayer. Breakthrough Prayer shares the principles Jim and his wife, Carol, have learned, with powerful examples from his own life and from the lives of members of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Many of us have grown up knowing that we should pray. But the truth is that most people pray, not because they're supposed to, but because they need to. Our needs are what drive us to prayer. But there's no shame in this. When we pray according to our needs, we are simply responding to the work of the Holy Spirit, who first exposes our need and then encourages us to come boldly to the throne of grace to find the help we need. But receiving answers to our prayers involves asking for what we need according to God's promises. For instance, asking God for a new Mercedes isn't likely to yield a fancy car. Where in the Bible has God promised such a thing? But we can ask God to strengthen us spiritually in a time of fear, because he has promised to be with us during such times. As Isaiah says, God created the stars and knows each of them by name. Though no one knows exactly how many stars there are, one estimate puts the number at three thousand million billion stars--a 3 with 16 zeroes after it! Can you even begin to comprehend the greatness and the vastnessof the God who made all this? Can't he handle the worst of our problems? Doesn't he have the resources to deal with the worst of our fears? Clearly God is powerful enough to provide a solution to your worst problem. But does he want to? More specifically, will he respond to your cries for help when you pray? The answers to our own prayers often come when we take action according to the way God leads us. It's not enough, often, to simply pray and wait for the answer. We need to take action according to God's promises, according to his direction, For instance, Jesus didn't say "Pray and the whole world will be converted." He told us to go out into the whole world and preach the gospel. The world will be converted when we do what God has already told us to do. He works as we obediently do his will as directed. The truth is that our tongues, which hold great potential for evil also hold tremendous potential for good. In fact, there are words and sentences that can change people's lives. There are words from the Bible that become especially powerful at a certain moment, in a certain place, spoken to certain people. But to be able to speak these words, we have to let the Lord waken our ears, we have to listen morning by morning as we wait in communion with him. Remember that Jesus, did only the things the Father told him to do. When we do the same, the real potential of our lives will unfold. Prayer will enable us to become people with instructed tongues who are able to sustain others in fearful times. in times much like our own.
