Synopsis
Physiology is a key subject for the USMLE and one that has been dominated by the Costanzo book published by LWW. This book was late so the first edition did not publish until the 2e of other titles published, so it will need some time to catch on, like the other volumes.
The USMLE Review Market The USMLE review product market traditionally has had high revenue potential because of the constant changes in the exams, the annual influx of new buyers preparing for the exams, and student's buying habits, notably that they will buy multiple review and Q&A books. This also explains the strong competition in the market. However, history has shown that medical students can be receptive to new products, and once trusted, students will recommend products to peers and younger students thus creating intense viral marketing. Print review books are still big sellers, and students seem to have more brand loyalty than residents and practitioners, and will use multiple volumes of a series if they liked one volume. The market has been led by several book series from LWW, McGraw-Hill, and Blackwell. Elsevier has had some success with review series (notably the Secrets and Adam Brochert series), but has not had a successful, comprehensive USMLE review series that offered coverage of all Step 1 subjects, in addition to Steps 2 and 3 reviews. The Rapid Review series has begun to emerge as a series, led by the Goljan Pathology book. The Rapid Review Formula Based on on-going market research, changing student needs, and identified weaknesses in the competition, the Rapid Review books were developed with the following features: Abbreviated, outline text Single-column layout Broad margins for notetaking and high-yield margin notes Comprehensive rationales for all answer options Student Consult access, including at least 350 USMLE-style questions, delivered through the RR testing engine Ed Goljan will be involved in each volume and prominently tied to each book for maximum exposure
