I use this book in my 7th grade language arts class. It's well-crafted, with a male main character their age, and a strong female adult character as well. The themes of self-reliance, the importance of bonds with chosen family, and pride are strong in this work. It also serves to give students, particularly those of urban areas, a glimpse into the life of a sheepherder. I highly recommend this book to anyone age 10 and above. (12 chapters, total pages 150)
