Synopses & Reviews
A world-famous classic novel is the basis for this brand-new, dramatically illustrated book. Transformed from Victor Hugo's original text into a graphic novel, this, like other Graphic Classics editions, makes a good introduction for young readers to the imaginative riches of literature. These books contain many extra features, including brief biographies of their authors, a list of each author's important works, a glossary, and an index. Suitable for classroom use as introductions to literature for junior and senior high school students, these graphic novels entertain young readers while introducing them to the works of renowned literary artists. Full-color illustrations throughout. Retold here is the tragic story of Quasimodo, the hunchback bell tender of Paris's Notre Dame cathedral, and his struggle to save Esmerelda, a girl falsely accused of a crime she did not commit.
Review
"Quick paced and dramatic… a highly appealing visual format. The use of color sets the tone… while the detailed illustrations bring the stories to life, capturing action and emotion and making these classics accessible and attractive. The exciting artwork and particularly expressive faces of Esmeralda, and Quasimodo draw readers into their stories. These titles would be useful for introducing students to Hugo or as an alternative for reluctant/struggling readers"

Review
"If novel adaptations have a place in your home, you may want to look for this one at the library or bookstore. Barrons'
Graphic Classics series adapts classic novels into graphic novels that appeal to both teachers and students. …
This retelling of Victor Hugo's famous novel captures the dark, mysterious setting, intriguing, complex characters, and tension between the characters. …
This adaptation is very enjoyable. My 9-year-old read it all in one sitting because she couldn't put it down. A homeschool mom could give this book to her children to whet their appetites for a great literary work, to entice reluctant readers with some easy reading that's also "good for them," or to give them an overview before reading Mr. Hugo's novel. Parent teachers will appreciate the supplementary material in the back: a biography and timeline of the author, a list of his important works, a glossary, and an index. You'll enjoy this novel adaptation!"
