Synopsis
Judith Edwards traces the history of the bloody August 1831 uprising in which Nat Turner and a band of his fellow slaves carried out a brutal attack against the white people of Southampton County, Virginia. Turner and his followers hoped to win freedom for themselves and other slaves. The rebellion, though unsuccessful, caused fearful slave owners to take more serious measures to prevent slaves from rising up or running away. It also inspired those in the North, the abolitionists, to continue their fight for freedom for the slaves.
