I first read this play because my son's High School principal had decided that it was too controversial and she would not to allow the theater teacher to put it on at his school. The principal had not read the play before making this decision, and had only the vaguest sense of what it was about. Moreover, the principal essentially threatened to fire the teacher if the issue was pursued. After reading it, I wanted to share it with as many people as possible and have been loaning or giving it it to friends, relatives, other teachers, anyone willing to read it. It is truly an important work, putting a human face on the people of Laramie, Wyoming and making clear the suffering that was caused to the whole community by a few, disturbed people. What happened there could happen anywhere, and we not only shouldn't, but can't, hide these difficult truths.
