Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Anne Cameron is legit! She is passing in stories and age old wisdom from the women, the leaders, of the societies of the Salish Sea (Pacific Coast BC). Her tone spans perfectly the dawn time, contact with Russians and Catholics, and this modern, post-genocide world we find ourselves in at the end of the 20th century. I love this book. I have read it 20 times and have given it as a gift a handful. Get it. Read it. Share it. Read it again. Repeat. There are new lessons in it each time you do.
