Minuk is fascinated by the missionary family that moves into her village along the Upper Kuskokwim River--she's never seen a white person before. The missionaries can speak the Yup'ik language, but they have little appreciation of Yup'ik ways. When disaster strikes, Minuk learns firsthand that while the white people's medicine is strong, so are their diseases.
