Alan Glynn's "The Dark Fields" was filmed recently as "Limitless" (starring Bradley Cooper). It's a high concept mystery/thriller about a writer who gets given a sample of an experimental drug that greatly magnifies his mental capacity -- he's able to learn foreign languages overnight, read a book in an hour with perfect recall, and write his own books rapidly. Unfortunately for him, the drug is highly addictive with unstable side effects, and he needs to get more supply, and he gets mixed up with a Russian mobster. . . . From what I gather, the novel is much darker than the movie (which I didn't see). I thought the author did a very good job of conveying what it was like to be under the influence of the drug, as well as not being under the influence. The ending felt kind of rushed, which is why I'm giving it four stars.
