Wholesome Food from the Whole Wide World
The kitchen is the most vital place on Earth, because survival even now in the age of iPads and large hadron colliders still depends on wholesome, nutritious food. In keeping with this simple truth Veggiyana provides108 tasty, beloved and simple recipes from around the world. And generously sprinkled throughoutlike the perfect blend of herbs and spices are morsels of time-tested wisdom on how to live a life that nourishes both body and spirit. Veggiyana brings the vitality of the worlds kitchens to your own with wisdom and recipes to delight and inspire.
From the author of Veggiyana:
This is not so much a book about vegetarian cooking as it is a statement, an accounting of riches. I wanted to offer an eye-opening reminder that all of us are heirs to the world’s greatest wealth: that magical mix of science and art dished out every day in crock pots, ramekins, and bento boxes.”
More on Veggiyana:
In Veggiyana, Sandy Garson, chef and Dharma student, presents us with what she calls reach-fors”: beloved recipes she returns to time and again, knowing that they will always be good, that they will always be right. These dishes are remarkably international in scope and universal in appeal; drawn from culinary traditions across the globe, they are easy to follow, easy to make, healthy, and so delicious that they will soon become your reach-fors” as well.
But Sandy has also done so much more than that; she has written a love letter to centuries of culinary innovation and tradition. In short essays scattered like mezze throughout the book, she explores at once our rich worldwide history of cookinghow pasta came to Italy, why the cow is sacred in Indiaand her own personal path as a cook and a Buddhist.
For Sandy, to cook for others is an act of love; to prepare food for someone is her own personal path of devotion. Thus was born the Veggiyana, the path of vegetables, a global initiative to bring the gift of nutrition to impoverished monasteries, convents, and orphanages.
Spiced liberally with wit and wisdom from sources as diverse as Buddhists sages and food writers, Veggiyana is a celebration of the glorious alchemy that is cooking.
